Barosan de Bazaar
The “Fat Cat” of the Flea Market
Bucharest, Romania - July 2016
There is a uniquely comical aspect to the Mitică (the average male resident of Bucharest) highly visible in the weekend flea market. Not the flea market of old stuff, but the one that specializes in last season’s electronics, left over consumer fashion, and excess inventories of whatever kind; and not really your “average” bucharester, but the oversized ones.
I aptly named this series Barosan from its definition as "big shot," "big guy," "influential person," or "fat cat" (as a noun), and "big," "huge," or "heavy" (as an adjective). What’s unique and comical about these men, is that they are evidently so very proud of their big bellies that they actually either fully expose their torsos, or open their shirts, or even lift their t-shirts to feature them. Perhaps it’s more a way to ventilate on hot summer days, but the effect is the same nevertheless.
I took the photographs on 02 July at Targul Valea Cascadelor where the temperature reached 33 degrees Celsius or 91 Fahrenheit; and on 03 June at Targul Vitan, 31 Celsius or 88 Fahrenheit.
