As a young boy growing up in Beirut, Lebanon my mother forbade me from reading comic books, telling me I should rather concentrate on my homework and studies. I would go to the nearby grocery store where the lady shop owner would allow me to sit on a sack of potatoes and read the latest issues of Superman and Batman Arabic editions. Next to me on the newsstand were all these magazines with mostly Hollywood stars and western women on the cover, and the others with Lebanese and Arab world politicians. I never imagined that in other parts of the world magazines were being printed with just photographs of cute boys.
For this project I found Lebanese Magazine Covers from the 1960s, scanned and reconstructed them to include photographs of gay male pinups pretty much from the same time they were printed. It is pretty much a case of obvious stereo types. I eventually started to combine such imagery on American magazine covers from my own archive.
