Some time in the mid to late 20th Century, some artists began to use photography as a tool for making art. Fair Enough. But when they began to garner Awards, Scholarships, Residencies, etc. designed for Photography, I began to object, sometimes silently, sometimes vocally.
As adventurous and as progressive as I am with my “photographic” practice, I am still a purist when it comes to this medium, of which I am extremely passionate and protective. I still strongly believe that this category, this medium which literally changed the world, several times since its introduction in 1826, is a communion between the photographer and the world through a camera. It’s that simple.
It took quite some time before Photography began to be regarded as a potential art form, perhaps when Alfred Stieglitz opened his first gallery, the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession (commonly known as "291"), on November 24, 1905. But yet, the “Art World” likes to keep it separated from the “Beaux Arts,” namely Painting, Sculpture, and various forms of Printmaking.
Even within Photography itself, for the first 25 years of my now 50 years of practice, I was strict about cropping, and that a true photographic print should be exactly how the camera recorded it, regardless of how the photographer captured it, whether s/he were intentional or lackadaisical in form. I have since significantly relaxed that position, particularly since the advent of Digital Photography, in which I am a pioneer.
With the new technology, I even stretched the boundaries of the medium to extremes, harnessing the power of photo editing and compositing into new frontiers. It is for this reason I created this third section that gives a space for this aspect of my work to be featured and even stand out.
I am also using AI to create imagery and have wondered if I should create a fourth section, but for now I will keep it here, in its own subsection.
